Rainbow colors highlight Shepherdstown Presbyterian church in this convergent media work by Julia Springer

Shepherdstown Presbyterian church welcomes all!

So, today I have been working on an image to capture the meaning of my church. At SPC we choose welcome! I was inspired to complete this work by the retirement of our pastor, Randy Tremba, who is leaving after over 40 years in the job. Randy, this one is for you!

Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, or SPC to those of us who love her, is the epitome of inclusivity. I first went there in 2008, and was immediately struck by the focus on the globe, rather than the US. Social justice and welcome are central to the congregation.

This image incorporates text and symbology taken from signage around the building, as well as a phrase from Micah 6:8 – seek justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your god. The lower case ‘g’ is intentional, for this sentiment is not exclusive to the Christian or Jewish faiths. No matter what you call your god, or if you have no god, you are welcome in the walls of SPC. The rainbow colors reflect SPC’s long term commitment to the LGBTQ community.

Hope you like it. Don’t forget to come and see my booth on June 24 at Shepherdstown Street Fest. There will be lots of other vendors and plenty of great music and revelry!
